MSc course director in Mathematical Sciences (2011-2013)
- The MSc programme in Mathematical Sciences was under threat of closure because of a low intake when Dr Vitaliy Kurlin became the course director in August 2011.
- Indeed, in 2010 there were 2 students, the maximum over past years was 7. Another MSc programme with a similar low intake was closed down in 2011.
- The following major improvements have saved MSc in Mathematical Sciences:
- The MSc web page was completely re-designed and was regularly updated.
- All e-mail queries from potential MSc students were answered within few hours.
- An entrance exam was introduced and was quickly and electronically marked.
- New MSc students received a detailed step-by-step guide at the induction event.
- Individual meetings with the course director helped MSc students with their studies. These individual meetings were unfortunately cancelled by the new course director.
- The following facts are the real outcomes of the past hard work in 2011-2013:
- The MSc class increased from 5 in 2011 to 12 in 2012, then to 15 in 2013.
- The university has received a large revenue from these extra tuition fees: 5300 GBP per European student, 13300 GBP per overseas student in 2013.
- The proportion of MSc students who failed exams almost halved in 2013 and dropped again in 2014 with many students achieving high 70+ marks.

- The total number of written submissions increased from 24 in 2010 to 126 in 2011, however Durham has completely closed the gifted and talented programme in 2012.
